In May, spring comes alive and becomes a tangible reward that Mother Nature bestows upon us for sucessfully surviving a long cold winter. The earth's renewal surrounds us, and with longer days filled with light and the beauty of warm weather, many of us are spurred toward the renewal of our own minds and bodies. It’s no surprise, therefore, that both Mental Health Awareness and National Physical Fitness months are celebrated in May. This month, RMACT would like to encourage your path to renewal by gifting RMACT patients with a pedometer (while supplies last). Our hope is that the gentle movement that walking provides will lead you further down the path to becoming healthier, more fertile people.

Pedometers to Encourage Renewal with Exercise and Emotional Health

Connections between our emotional & physical states

Walking, and other exercise, connect back to our brains and our emotional states. Here's what HelpGuide.org shares:

"Exercise promotes all kinds of changes in the brain, including neural growth, reduced inflammation, and new activity patterns that promote feelings of calm and well-being. It also releases endorphins, powerful chemicals in your brain that energize your spirits and make you feel good. Finally, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to break out of the cycle of negative thoughts that feed depression, anxiety and stress."

RMACT's Mental Health Director Explains More

Some feelings of depression, anxiety and stress are natural during infertility and are often present, on one level or another, during fertility treatment. Reducing these feelings can ensure better focus on one's goals. Lisa Schuman, LCSW, RMACT's Mental Health Director explains further:

“Fertility treatment can be like running a marathon, and our RMACT Team understands that sometimes patients need emotional support in order to stay in the race.” says Lisa. “When seeing infertility patients – as with all patients – my goal is their goal. Some patients come to me with a finite goal, such as making an important decision about treatment or becoming more educated about talking to their children about donor gametes. For others, the goal is ongoing, such as managing stress or addressing conflicts in their relationships.”

We're Renewing Mind and Body, too!

We don't just talk the talk, we walk the walk (literally). The staff at RMACT also received pedometers this month and will be walking in solidarity with you - working towards our own renewal of mind and body. As we walk on our lunch break, or in the morning or evening, we'll be sending positive thoughts your way.

Together, we'll walk the path to renewal...creating healthier, more fertile selves! One step at a time.

Lisa Rosenthal

Lisa has over twenty-five years of experience in the fertility field. After her personal infertility journey, she felt dissatisfied with the lack of comprehensive services available to support her. She was determined to help others undergoing fertility treatment. Lisa has been with RMACT for seven years and serves as Patient Advocate and the Strategic Content Lead.

Lisa is the teacher and founder of Fertile Yoga, a program designed to support men and women on their quest for their families through gentle movement and meditation.

Lisa’s true passion is supporting patients getting into treatment, being able to stay in treatment and staying whole and complete throughout the process. Lisa is also a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, which is helpful in her work with fertility patients.

Her experience also includes working with RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association and The American Fertility Association (now Path2Parenthood), where she was Educational Coordinator, Conference Director and Assistant Executive Director.
