I can be like a dog with a bone. Persistent.

words-that-describe-fertility-journeySimilar to how I was during fertility treatment, determined. What was new? What was unexplored? What could I try next?

What would finally work?

How Do You Describe Yourself While In Fertility Treatment?

The bone I’m chewing on these days has to do with how we describe ourselves while we’re in fertility treatment. I’d like to reframe it for one simple reason.

It’s demeaning. Most of the time.

We call ourselves crazy. Or obsessed. Or out of our minds. Or insane. Or f**ked up.

A few days ago I wrote a blog that offered a different approach. Of looking at synonyms for these words and here was a bunch that came up: determined, passionate, dedicated, persistent, focused, extreme, fixated, extreme and more.

My two words while I was trying to conceive were Unrelentingly Persistent. I didn’t let anything stop me. I found a way to keep trying and trying and trying. Unrelentingly Persistent fit me well then and they still fit me very well today. And don’t they sound a little kinder than crazy? And don’t they actually fit better than crazy?

Stop Calling Yourself Crazy. You Are Not Crazy.

I want us to stop looking at ourselves as crazy because I believe then others will stop looking at us like we’re crazy. Because here’s the thing. We need to be focused while we’re in fertility treatment. There’s a lot that needs to be organized and scheduled and “relaxing” can mean forgetting or making a mistake that can cost time, effort and/or money. We need to be dedicated to the effort because it takes just that; dedication. We are not crazy.

If we stop calling ourselves crazy and better yet, stop THINKING of ourselves as crazy, maybe we will see and even admire the dedication we are giving our baby making efforts. Maybe we will see the strength that it takes to keep trying, despite disappointments.
