What It Takes To Become PregnantSoooooooo……….There appears to be some misunderstandings about fertility and infertility that I think it’s time to clear up.

What it takes to conceive.

One sperm.

One egg.

Sperm penetrates egg.

Conception takes place.

Embryo implants into uterus.

Nine months later (or thereabouts), voila, there’s a baby.

Now granted, that’s the ultra simplified version. There are many, many tiny and not so tiny pieces that have to fall into place for all that to happen.

Still, that’s the basic scenario.

How You Don't Get Pregnant

Here’s how we don’t get pregnant. Really and truly.

We don’t relax and get pregnant (a personal non-favorite of mine).

We don’t go on vacation and get pregnant.

We don’t stop thinking about it and get pregnant.

We don’t focus on something else and get pregnant.

We don’t put it in God’s hands and get pregnant (nope, not even that one).

We don’t accept it and get pregnant (it being infertility).

We don’t buy a new house, get another degree, concentrate on other things and get pregnant.

Notice a common refrain?

And get pregnant.

None of those things get us pregnant.

Because what we need to get pregnant is to get the egg and the sperm together, do what they need to do and implant into our uteruses.

That’s what we need to get pregnant.

None of those other things will get us pregnant.

So stop suggesting them.

It’s simple biology.

And when it’s not so simple biology, we need help.

What It Takes To Become Pregnant, When It's Not So Simple

So basically?

We won’t relax, take a vacation, think about something else, blah, blah, blah. (We may still pray, but that’s really none of your business.)

What will we do?

We will seek help. Like you would with any other medical condition.

We will go to a doctor.

If we really want to become pregnant, we will make an appointment with a board certified Reproductive Endocrinologist, because they are the real fertility specialists, as proven by extra education and passing specialized tests.

So now I hope we are entirely clear on what it takes to become pregnant.

And please notice I did not use the word sex here once. Because if you are a gay man, lesbian woman, or transgender person, that ain’t going to do it either.

So……..

Just a reminder.

What it takes to become pregnant.

One sperm, one egg.

How they get together is a story for another day.

And by the way? Not going to get pregnant because a fairy waves her magic wand either.

Sorry.
