Not every doctor’s practice is created equally. Including a fertility doctor. We all know that.
Some doctors are a better fit for us than others. Some of us care about some traits more than others. Maybe you need hand holding and a sympathetic attitude and I need a fertility doctor that says it straight out. There’s never a one size, fits all. Doubtful that rude is a good fit for any of us though. We may be able to tolerate it, but we don’t actively seek it out.
As a group, those of us facing infertility and fertility treatment, are not the happiest folks around. Probably needless to say. Probably quite obvious.
We're upset. We're frustrated. We're scared. I will even say for myself, I was downright needy.
We need a lot of support and help and we're less likely to look in the usual places to get it. We're not going to talk to our friends and family, much less our work colleagues.
Patient Support at a Connecticut Fertility Program
Often, our expectation is that we will get it from the fertility doctors or programs that we are seeing to treat our infertility problems.
It's asking a lot. I never realized it while I was in fertility treatment.
Not only do the doctors need to be board-certified Reproductive Endocrinologists, up-to-date on the research and data in the field, willing to work seven days a week, they also need to be sensitive, compassionate and able to listen.
It's asking a lot.
Sensitivity, compassion and ability to hear are not taught in Medical School.
It's a lot to ask.
And you have every right to expect it.
Compassionate Treatment at the Doctor's Office – A Patient's Right
We all deserve to be treated compassionately in a doctor's office. From the first phone call, to making the appointment, to walking in to speak to the person at the front desk, to getting testing done and blood drawn, to working with the medical assistants, the nurses, the patient coordinators, the physicians' assistants and the doctors.
I was in a physicians' office today. They are a very reputable practice with well-known doctors. The person signing me in never even looked up. Didn't greet me by name, didn't tell me where to wait or how long the wait might be. The person who came out to bring me into the doctors' office also didn't look up. Also didn't greet me. There was an absence of warmth from the moment that I walked into their office. It didn't improve from there. It's the atmosphere in that office, impersonal, highly clinical. They are good doctors, dispensing good medical care.
I admit it. I'm spoiled. I'm used to the team members at Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT). They are a professional, warm, friendly group of people. They are compassionate. They have to be to work for RMACT- it’s part of what is necessary to be hired.
They, we, are not perfect. We are human beings so we slip up. But our goals are clear. To be present for you, the patient. To make your time with us as uncomplicated and pleasant as it can be. To look up when we speak to you. To thank you. To say your welcome.
To offer support every step of the way. I wish every doctors' practice was as dedicated to that type of support as RMACT. I wish I felt cared for the way that we care for our patients in the doctor's offices that I frequent as a patient.
To our RMACT team members: I thought of you today, longingly. Sending you huge thanks for what you do, every single day, even when working very hard, to make our patients feel like whole and complete human beings.
